our family is having a birthday february 10-11. i wonder what mom will get me. i hope it's not that weak catnip... if it ain't cosmic, i ain't interested. please get me some yummy moist food, mom. and please make it tuna! me and henri, we're gonna be 4 years old... how time flies!

this is my all-time favorite picture of hank, taken in 2003. he knows he's not supposed to be on top of the toaster oven-- you can see it in his sheepish expression. notice also the random things on my countertop, a reflection of my (mom's) scattered life: a granola bar wrapper, some tupperware, keys that ought to be hanging on the hook at the far left of the photo, a single piece of popcorn.

and, of course, an enormous cat as orange as a magic marker.

an animal poem
---------------
I've got two kittens who are rapidly becoming
cats and at night
we share the same bed--the problem being that
they are early risers:
I am often awakened by paws and noses touching my
face.

all they do is run, eat, sleep, shit and
play
but at moments they are quiet and look
at me
with eyes
more beautiful than any human eyes I've
seen.

late at night while I rest and type
they'll hang around
say
one on the back of my chair as the other
attacks my toes.
we have a natural concern for one another, we each
need to be assured that the others are safely
there.

suddenly they'll
spring into action
run across the floor
run through the typed sheets laying there
leaving wrinkles and tiny punctures in the
poems.

then
they'll leap into the open carton of unaswered mail I've
received from my readers
and scratch furiously:
fortunately they (the cats) are house-
broken.

I expect now to write any number of cat poems
because of them
of which this is the
first.

are cats!"

but these complainers will still keep buying my
books: they love the way I irritate
them.

Plateau cats join the blogsphere

We're a cat family from the Plateau neighborhood in Montreal. We're new to the blogsphere, and thought it was time we intoduced ourselves. So hi, I'm Luna. I'm the tortoise shell with the split face. The orange glow on one side of my face, juxtaposed againt the black side, looks like a half moon in the night sky, or so Weed Slave thought when he met me. "Luna, the moon goddess", he said. I was born in an alley, like a lot of Montreal cats, and adopted by our friend Weed Slave. Although still a young cat myself, I have a family of my own now. Two of the five are still at home with me. It looks like we're a permanent unit. They turned 2 this year. I'll soon be 4. My other kids all found great homes. Some of them may even be floating around this site somewhere. The 2 that still live with me have grown into fine young cats. I though they might drive me mad when they were kittens, but they grow up so fast.
Dante is a devilish one. His father may have been a vampire. That would explain his need to chew on everyone's ankles. It might also explain his fangs. I may have slept with a vampire. I can't really remember. You know how those Plateau alley parties can get! Maybe his father was Sylvester though. He does have Sylvester's classic markings, if a little askew.
Titus is a girl. Some day I'll have to tell her that her father was a gerbil, but I guess she'll know that, if she ever sees this baby picture. Poor Titus. Weed Slave though Titus was a boy for the first 6 months, hence the name. Ooops! He goofed. She's very lovely, with her peach highlights. So Titus is a girl. I could have told him that!
